Using skills and approaches I learned in the MET … I will eventually create a proposal for implementing a learning analytics approach at VCC.

Format: Video
Course: ETEC 543 Understanding Learning Analytics
The final assignment in the learning analytics course was to create a proposal for implementing learning analytics at my own institution. I selected video as the format for this assignment as it allows me to explain my thinking in more detail that I could in an academic paper.

Guiding Theories and Frameworks

The Rapid Outcome Mapping Approach (ROMA) Model, expanded in the SHIELA (Supporting Higher Education to Integrate Learning Analytics) Framework (Tsai et. al., 2018) was the most important framework I employed for this artifact. It is a useful tool both for implementation and planning when it comes to adopting learning analytics. The artifact itself outlines how I used the ROMA Model to think about and structure my proposal.

Reflections

Overall, the learning analytics course left me with a few take aways. Implementing learning analytics could potentially help improve outcomes at the college – both institutional and academic outcomes. At the same time, taking on an implementation like this will be a lot of work, involving many stakeholders.

One approach could be a pilot phase where we select a limited range of data sources (perhaps the LMS) and look at how data from these sources could be used to provide actionable insights.

I certainly plan to keep up with developments in this field – I am a strong proponent of data-driven decision making, but maintaining the human-in-the-loop.
